Website: Malcolm Wilson, OBE
Currently: Managing Director, M-Sport (overseeing Ford World Rally Team in WRC, Fiesta Sporting Trophy in 9 different countries)
Career highlights: 2006 & 2007 FIA World Rally Manufacturers’ Champion with the Ford World Rally Team; 1994 MSA British Rally Drivers’ Champion; 1970s-1980s top-line British rally & WRC driver during GpA & GpB periods with Ford (Escorts, Sierras and RS200s), MG (Metro 6R4) and Audi (Quattro).
Malcolm Wilson is one of British rallying’s most successful names and with more than 30 years experience in motor sport – most of that time allied to the Ford name – is ideally placed to offer support and advice as a Go Motorsport ambassador.
Wilson rose to fame in the mid 1970s with two national rally titles in Escorts. In the 1980s he became one of an elite bunch of drivers to tame the mighty GpB machinery of the day, handling the raucous MG Metro 6R4 and Ford RS200s at national and international level. There were endless plaudits and in 1988 he became the first British driver in history to finish the WRC’s Swedish round inside the top ten driving a Vauxhall Astra 16V GTE. In 1994, back with Ford, he eventually won the BRC crown. And it is with the ‘Blue Oval’ that he has gone onto enjoy even greater success as a team owner.
As well as the BRC, Wilson’s own Malcolm Wilson Motorsport also won national titles running Ford Escorts in Italy, Portugal and the Middle East and at the end of the ‘96 season it was appointed to run Ford’s official factory WRC programme. In 1998, the Focus replaced the Escort and since then there have been numerous wins on rounds of the WRC, the biggest highlight to date the capturing of the 2006 Manufacturers’ crown – Ford’s first Manufacturers’ title in the WRC since 1979 - and retaining that title in 2007.
Malcolm was appointed OBE for his services to Motor Sport in the 2009 Birthday Honours.
